该剧讲述1938年至1944年期间，日本侵华、山河破碎，在中国共产党的领导和推动下，夏衍、郭沫若、田汉、巴金、柳亚子、陶行知、徐悲鸿、茅盾、欧阳予倩等一大批爱国进步文化人士云集桂林，与以李克农为代表的“桂林八办”（八路军桂林办事处）一起，在绝美的山水间，以笔为枪，以舞台做战场，通过新闻、文学、戏剧、音乐、美术等一系列文化运动，宣传抗日民族统一战线，将流亡与复兴、时艰与责任、生存与死亡、个人情感与民族情怀等都转化为抵御外来侵略的民族文化长城，进行一场没有硝烟的“文化抗战”的故事。。代号“传话人”的前职业杀手瑞安来到印尼的一座小镇补充物资，并偶然结识了善良的多尼一家，他在这个家里感受到了家庭的温暖与爱。然而，当地人口贩子们的出现打破了这一切，他们在街上肆意妄为，导致多尼受伤。瑞安无法容忍这种恶行，与他们展开了激烈的斗争。
