故事发生在一艘正在驶往波士顿的游轮上。半路上，邮轮遭遇了猛烈的风暴袭击，最终导致了抛锚。船只产生了裂缝，大量的海水开始渗入船体内部，如果不加以控制的话，整艘邮轮都将有沉没的风险。雷是船上职位最高的船员，这也就意味着，他对于船上30名船员的生命有着不可推卸的责任。经验丰富的雷决定不坐以待毙，而是带领船员们展开了自救行动。
