追求个性解放的子君闯入了涓生的生活，他们无视旁人的冷嘲热讽，毅然结合到一起。但在黑暗的封建社会里，幸福总是短暂的。婚前双方相互了解的缺乏，加上性格的不同，导致二人摩擦不断。涓生失业后，对曾经的盲目、天真充满悔恨，子君发现了涓生内心的变化，知道这段荒唐的婚姻该结束了。爱情的幻灭，让子君走向了死亡。子君的死，把涓生推向强烈的自责和痛苦之中，他谴责自己的无能和怯懦，受过“五四”运动洗礼的涓生陷入沉思。他逐渐明白这个世界不是自己所能改变的，但他又不甘沉沦，整日里苦思冥想，人生的出路到底在哪里......
