故事从1978年讲起，陈福生是一名电影放映员，育有一子名为陈焕。干部林汉民是陈福生的邻居，而他的女儿林平平和陈焕则是从小玩到大的青梅竹马。在文革中，林汉民蒙冤受罚，而品学兼优的林平平亦因为父亲的政治问题无缘理想中的大学，与此同时，陈焕被师范大学录取，两人从此渐行渐远。之后，林汉民的冤屈遭到了平反，之后，林平平进入了北京大学深造，而她和陈焕之间的缘分亦遭受着种种考验。时间如流水一般静静流淌，在时代车轮飞速向前旋转的同时，陈家和林家，这些小人物的命运被迫裹挟在轮下，不断向前。。As a young boy, Charlie escaped the Armenian Genocide by stowing away in a trunk bound for the United States.
