马建新（陈建斌 饰）是火车修理厂里的一名员工，虽然平日里沉默寡言毫不起眼，但他对待工作却格外的认真和踏实，是一个靠谱的青年。某日，工厂派马建新前往铁路系统学习班深造，在那里，马建新结识了名为李卫华（吴越 饰）的老师。
