19世纪中叶，帝国主义轰开了古老中国的大门，一纸《南京条约》签订，上海正式开埠，从此各种各样的传奇与悲喜人生在这片土地上交替上演。将近一百年后，世界局势动荡不安，各方势力汇集于魔都，继续谱写着属于这座城市的传奇。镜头前，陈丹青、杨小佛（杨杏佛之子）、杜美如（杜月笙之女）、张心漪（曾国藩之曾外孙女）、韦然（上官云珠之子）、费明仪（费穆之女）、韦伟、侯孝贤、韩寒等18位与新旧上海有着千丝万缕联系的受访者，讲述了关于城市以及人生的点点滴滴。
